A 25-year-old aspiring Logan rapper will spend Christmas in jail after breaking into his ex-partner’s home and attacking her during a chilling home invasion.

Rochedale South dad Joseph Phillip Hartley, 25, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Thursday to seven charges including assault occasioning bodily harm (domestic violence offence) and enter dwelling intent by break (domestic violence offence).

The court heard Hartley, an aspiring rapper who releases music under the name “Lil Slim” on social media, walked to into his ex-partner’s home in Kingston demanding money about 10am on September 2.

He was asked to leave and was locked outside the house after yelling: “Give me money. I’m going to jail anyway, I may as well make it worth my while!”

Hartley then ripped the front flyscreen door from the house and kicked open another wooden door by breaking its hinges before re-entering the house.

He approached his ex-partner and grabbed her by the shirt, causing it to tear, before throwing her into a wall.

Hartley then threw her to the ground and punched the left side of her face, causing immediate swelling and bruising, before he left.

Magistrate Cameron McKenzie said he found the defendant’s behaviour “reprehensible”.

He said Hartley had been on parole at the time of the offending and had a history of domestic violence-related offending.

Hartley’s ex-partner, who read out her victim impact statement in court, said she was now “living in fear” daily as a result of his continued offending.

“I am still in great fear for my family’s safety and wellbeing as well as my own,” she said.

“Every aspect of my life has now changed.”

“I no longer feel safe in my own home and am seeking to relocate.

“Not only have these crimes affected myself emotionally, physically and physiologically, it has also affected our children’s lives.”

Hartley’s lawyer told the court he was remorseful for the way he had made his ex-partner feel and had been struggling due to not being able to see his children.

Magistrate McKenzie acknowledged the defendant had already spent 105 days in custody and sentenced him to 18 months imprisonment with a parole release date on March 2, 2022.
