A 23-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the alleged attempted murder of a Comanchero in Logan last week, as fears of rising tensions between two rival Middle Eastern crime groups grow.
It is understood Kyle Leofa, 25, presented at the emergency department of the Mater Hospital with a suspected gunshot wound to the face on Monday, September 12, prompting police to commence an investigation.
Police said their inquiries revealed a “disturbance” had occurred in the carpark of an Underwood business about 7pm that evening during which a group of men filming a video were approached by two vehicles, one containing Mr Leofa.
It was then that the alleged “shooting incident” occurred, leaving Mr Leofa with a significant wound to his face and throat.
A 23-year-old man was arrested by Victoria Police detectives, with the assistance of Queensland Police detectives, at an apartment in Southbank on Friday morning, September 23.
He was ordered to appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court the same day, where detectives from the Organised Crime Gangs Group applied to extradite him back to Queensland.
“The QPS established Operation Dagobah, made up of members from the Crime and Intelligence Commands’ Organised Crime Squad and Gangs Group, and Brisbane and South Eastern regions, supported by specialist resources from Operations Support Command, to spearhead investigations into incidents between two rival groups,” a police statement made in the wake of the alleged shooting read.
Operation Dagobah has to date investigated seven drive-by shootings and arrested nine men.
The alleged shooting is understood to have taken place mere hours after another man linked to the Comancheros was stabbed to death in a Brisbane street, though there is no suggestion the two incidents are linked.
