A Logan plasterer’s karate chops and hits with a plastic cricket bat to his partner, has seen him jailed, despite telling a court he was only “playing around”.

Matthew Luke John Campbell, 23, pleaded guilty to two counts of common assault (domestic violence offences) in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Wednesday, August 9.

The court heard that on October 3, 2022 in Slacks Creek, Campbell karate chopped his partner on the arm.

In Coopers Plains on the same date, he hit the victim with a plastic cricket bat on the right thigh.

Coopers Plains man Campbell told the police in an interview he was ‘just messing around’ and got confused between what was playing around and what was domestic violence.

The court heard Campbell worked as a plasterer and was a father of four.

Magistrate Gary Finger said it was a bizarre range of offences.

“The offences are relatively minor and were not reported until May,” he said.

“I still take into account they are domestic violence offences but you have done enough time in custody.

“It is up for the parole board to decide when you are released now.”

Campbell was convicted and not further punished. He had already served 96 days of pre-sentence custody.

Convictions were recorded.
