A Logan man has faced court charged with bashing an off-duty police officer who had stopped to help him after seeing he had crashed his car.

Police allege Matthew De Jongh, 23, brutally bashed a 51-year-old Logan officer.

The Sergeant had pulled over after seeing Mr De Jongh had crashed his car in the Greenbank area after 2pm on Thursday.

Police say the now hospitalised officer was in uniform but off duty and “just trying to help”.

Police allege Mr De Jongh “belted and bashed him brutally”.

It is understood the officer suffered injuries to the head and face area.

Police confirmed he suffered numerous lacerations to the head and had to get multiple stitches.

Mr De Jongh faced Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Friday charged with assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm, and two counts of dangerous driving.

He was remanded in custody and will face Beenleigh Magistrates Court again on April 14.
