A man, 65, has died after fire fighters battled for half an hour to free him when he fell under a truck at a busy Logan shopping centre carpark this afternoon.

Two crews arrived at the scene at Beenleigh Market Place in George St, Beenleigh about 2.20pm on Wednesday, March 6. Ambulance officers arrived soon after.

Cutting equipment had to be used to free the man.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said the man suffered significant leg injuries and was transported in a critical condition to the Princess Alexandra Hospital, but tragically was dead on arrival.

It was not yet confirmed how the accident happened.

But one witness said the victim was a passenger in the truck, got out and walked in front of it.

Shoppers rushed to help the man despite the distressing scene.

Police appealed for any witnesses or anyone with dashcam vision or CCTV from the area to come forward.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the incident.

About the same time, three fire crews raced to a nearby Big W department store after reports of smoke billowing from it and reports of a possible gas leak.

A QFES spokeswoman said there were no injuries or major damage.
