A wild gang attack on two security guards by five men at Surfers Paradise during schoolies celebrations has been labelled “gratuitous violence” by a southeast Queensland Magistrate.

Yarrabilba man Mambo Kashindi, 24, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on November 28 to two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm.

The court heard that on November 25, 2020, Kashindi was in a group of five men when one of them was caught urinating in public by a security guard at the popular Gold Coast party spot.

A security guard approached the man and a fight broke out where the five men knocked the guard to the ground, crowded him and then laid a flurry of punches and kicks.

Another security guard rushed over and was also brutally bashed by the group of men.

The court heard the two victims suffered lacerations and bruising to their eyes and said in a victim impact statement they had suffered psychologically as well as physically after the assault.

Kashindi’s defence said he was affected by alcohol at the time and the situation got out of control.

Magistrate Michael O’Driscoll said it was a classic example of unnecessary, gratuitous violence.

“This was clearly inappropriate and unacceptable,” he said.

“These security guards were simply serving their duties.”

Kashindi received a 12-month prison sentence, wholly suspended for 18 months and a conviction was recorded.
