A Logan tattooist and ex-motocross racer has copped a heavy fine after a court heard she caused an accident while riding an unregistered dirt bike.

Macayleigh Shelton this week faced Beaudesert Magistrates Court, where she pleaded guilty to driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle, without the appropriate license, and without due care.

The court heard Shelton was dirt bike riding with friends on May 9 this year, when she decided to take the unregistered bike out onto the road in the Flagstone area.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Andrew Bjerring told the court three dirt bikes were spotted by police, who then followed them when one dirt bike causing an accident at a roundabout.

“The rider (Shelton) was attempting to mount the bike and ride off,” Senior Constable Bjerring said.

“Checking the registration number of the motorcycle showed it was not currently registered and had no records with Queensland Transport.

“The defendant stated she was only going for a ride with friends at the time.”

After police checks it was discovered her bike was incapable of being registered or insured.

The court heard Shelton only held a standard open driver’s license.

Sen Const. Bjerring told the court witnesses reported the dirt bike riders had failed to give way to drivers already on the roundabout.

The court heard Shelton used to be a motocross racer when she was younger.

Shelton’s lawyer said she knows she shouldn’t have taken the dirt bike onto the open road.

The court heard Shelton was suffering from her parents’ separation, had a limited traffic history, was working as a tattoo apprentice in Lutwyche, and that she was having trouble with her mental health.

Magistrate Tracy Mossop told the court the best thing for Shelton’s mental health would be to not commit offences and to not have the stress of court appearances.

“Dirt bikes can be fun in the right circumstances,” Ms Mossop said.

“But people like you give dirt bike riding a bad name.

“You shouldn’t have been on the road on this vehicle at all.

“You slid out on a roundabout and traffic had to break to avoid hitting you. It was just absolutely appalling and verging on dangerous.

“I hope you wake up to yourself.

“If you want to drive a dirt bike again do it in circumstances where you can do it out on property and won’t be a danger to anybody else on the roads. In fact that would be good for your mental health.

“You’re a danger to yourself and other people.”

Ms Mossop issued four fines for a combined total of $1429.

No convictions were recorded.
