A Logan couple, who miraculously escaped a deadly house fire, were moments away from death after leaping out a bedroom window and crawling from the fiery inferno.
Darlene, 56, and Gary Bramhall, 55, were at their home on Buena Vista Dr when a suspected electrical fault in the roof sparked a fire about 9pm on January 23, 2022.
“I would normally be asleep by then, but I was hanging up some clothes when I saw all this black smoke leeching down through the roof,” Darlene said.
“It was filling the hallway, and I ran to wake Gary up in the bedroom.
“We were trapped in there, and I said we’ve got to get out, so we had to jump out the window.
“I only had time to grab my phone. It all happened so fast.”
Darlene, who suffers from rheumatoid arthritis, was left in agony after shattering her knee during the jump.
“I had to crawl away from the house, and Gary was helping me,” she said.
“I looked back, the lounge room was on fire, and all the windows exploded.”
“If we had been in that house a few seconds longer, we wouldn’t have made it.”
“I would have been sound asleep at that time usually. We’re lucky to be alive.
“I reckon someone was looking down on me that day.
“That’s what it felt like, but it still breaks my heart to see the house completely destroyed.”
Long-time Logan resident Gary, who works in construction but lost his job during the pandemic, built their home on Buena Vista Dr from scratch.
“Every brick that was laid, was laid by him,” Darlene said.
“Now that it’s all gone, he’s heartbroken.”
“It was very depressing.”
With Darlene wheelchair-bound and awaiting knee surgery, the couple has been left with nothing due to the house not being insured.
The page has raised about $6000 so far, and the couple is hoping to use the money to set up a shed on the property to live in.
