Loganholme’s Michael Shane Richards jailed for death threats and brutal bashing of housemate

An innocuous argument between housemates over washing powder erupted into a brutal, violent attack involving a baseball bat, a broken jaw and death threats, a court has heard.

“If you tell anybody I’ll kill you”: A Loganholme man’s horrific threats and violent outbursts against his younger housemate over a minor argument have been revealed in court.

Michael Shane Richards, 57, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh District Court to grievous bodily harm, two counts of common assault, threatening violence and attempting to pervert justice.

The court heard that on November 28, 2021, the Loganholme man had a dispute with his 23-year-old housemate over washing powder.

Richards threw a can of soft drink at the victim and challenged him.

“Have a go mate, you’re a spineless dog,” he said.

The court heard Richards then punched the victim in the face which caused a fracture to the left and right side of his jaw, requiring surgery and titanium plates in his face.

“You’re lucky it was only one hit,” he said.

Richards then drove his housemate to Princess Alexandra Hospital and on the ride told him not to tell anyone about the incident, thereby attempting to pervert justice.

“Tell them you slipped and fell over, it’s a test and if you tell anybody I’ll kill you.”

On December 1, 2021, the victim was released from hospital and was resting at home when Richards aggressively approached him, making threats.

“You’ve f****d me over. I’m the only person that has loved you.”

Richards then punched and kicked him in the ribs before choking him with one hand.

He then returned with a baseball bat and wielded it over the man while continuing to verbally berate him.

“I’m going to break every bone in your body and splatter your brains on the walls.

“This is your fault, that will teach you a life lesson.”

The court heard Richards was arrested by police and showed a distinct lack of remorse.

“I won and he lost, he is a little bitch and a f*g,” said Richards to the interviewing officers.

Judge Craig Chowdhury said this was gratuitous violence and very serious behaviour.

Richards was sentenced to three and a half years in prison and will be eligible for parole on December 9, 2022.
