A Logan man brutally belted his neighbour five times in the head with a steel pole, almost fracturing his skull, a court has heard.

Australia's Court System

A Loganlea man who gruesomely attacked his neighbour five times with a weapon, slicing the victim’s head, told a court he was working on his anger issues.

Reece Brett, 23, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh Magistrates Court to one count of assault occasioning bodily harm with a weapon.

The court heard Brett was at his mother’s house in Kingston on January 22 this year when he believed his mother’s neighbour was trying to get their family car towed away.

The car was especially significant to Brett as it previously belonged to his deceased brother.

Brett hit the neighbour over the head with a white steel pole, one metre in length, and then continued to strike him while the neighbour was on the ground - landing about five blows to the victim

The court heard the assault was severe, gruesome, caused lacerations to the victim’s head and almost caused fractures to the skull.

Brett expressed remorse for his actions and said he was horrified at what he’d done.

He apologised verbally to the victim and told the court he was undergoing treatment around his anger issues.

Magistrate Patrina Clohessy said she understood why Brett was emotional but that did not in any way justify his actions.

“You became upset to put it mildly, towards a neighbour of your mother, there was some context but that does not excuse your reaction,” she said.

“This is completely unacceptable behaviour which needs to be deterred and denounced.

“You’re lucky he was not injured further, he could have died.”

Brett was sentenced to 15 months in prison with an immediate parole release date.

Magistrate Clohessy said parole conditions would help assist Brett in avoiding future offending.

“Take the support to help get your life back on track.”

He will also have to pay $2000 in compensation to the victim.
