A Logan motocross rider threatened to burn his partner’s house down with an aerosol can and a lighter after choking her during a torrent of verbal and physical abuse.

Beenleigh District Court heard on Thursday Jeremy Winkler-Booker, 29, was having an argument with his partner at their kids birthday party.

During the argument the Crestmead man pushed her into a door and choked her.

He also grabbed her by the hair and pushed her again.

The victim demanded he leave the house but Winkler-Booker refused and instead pulled out an aerosol can and a lighter while making violent threats.

“I’m gonna burn you alive, you c — t,” he said to his partner.

The court heard Winkler-Booker then stabbed the wall of the home with a knife, breaking its blade.

Winkler-Booker pleaded guilty to choking, common assault and wilful damage (domestic violence offences) for the attack on June 12, 2022.

The court heard he was a motocross rider and truck driver who planned to resume his career on the roads once released from custody.

Winkler-Booker said he had reflected on his actions during his time in custody.

“My time in jail made me realise my mistakes, I hope my former partner can recover and we can mediate for the sake of our child,” he said in a statement to the court.

He also said he will do anger management courses.

Judge Craig Chowdhury said Winkler-Booker had a history of domestic violence where he made threats over text message in 2021 to kill a woman.

“There is a major problem with domestic violence in the community,” said Judge Chowdhury.

“Choking is particularly serious as it can cause loss of consciousness and death.”

Winkler-Booker was sentenced to three years in prison, to be released on parole on May 24 this year.

He had already served 271 days of pre-sentence custody.
