A Logan tradie who stabbed his father in the chest while high on pot due to grandiose, religious delusions brought on by drug use, will spend no time behind bars.

A Logan labourer who stabbed his father in the chest while high on pot due to grandiose, religious delusions brought on by cannabis use, spent no time behind bars.

Danny Brandan Lee, 23, told his father he could picture him in heaven and then asked him for a cigarette in their Berrinba home in 2020.

Lee’s father reached down to grab a cigarette but was stabbed in the chest by a large kitchen knife.

Lee called an ambulance and his father was rushed to hospital with a collapsed lung.

The labourer pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding (domestic violence offence) in Beenleigh District Court on Tuesday for the stabbing on October 9, 2020.

The court heard Lee was suffering severe mental health issues at the time due to substance induced psychosis.

During this period, he thought he was sent to earth by god and his father was the devil.

Lee had been using cannabis regularly prior to the stabbing and had stopped taking his medication.

Lee’s father tendered a letter of reference in support and told the court he was working alongside his son as a concreter.

Judge Craig Chowdhury noted the defendant had no criminal history but said any stabbing offence was taken seriously by the courts.

“You’re very lucky you didn’t kill your father,” he said.

“Any time a knife is used it can cause disastrous consequences.”

Mr Chowdhury warned about the impacts of persistent cannabis use on a person’s mental health.

“Cannabis is not the benign drug some people think it is, it can cause serious psychiatric issues.”

Lee was sentenced to two years in prison and released immediately on parole.

He will be on parole for two years and have to report to a parole officer and submit to urine drug testing.
