A Logan law student has faced court after setting a kitchen sink on fire upon hearing his partner was seeing another person.

The south-west Logan resident pleaded guilty in Beenleigh Magistrates Court today, (June 5) to contravening a domestic violence protection order.

The court heard man in his 20s was at their home on January 24 this year with his partner when they started arguing.

“There was a verbal argument in the bedroom, before a brief struggle on the bed,” police prosecutor Tim Wise said.

“He went into the kitchen, he had lit a small fire in the sink area.”

The student’s lawyer, Mr Whitehead, said his client was remorseful.

“He did it out of stupidity,” Mr Whitehead said.

“He regrets the incident, he was frustrated.”

Magistrate Mark Howden said that it was unlikely the incident could cause serious damage, but was to be taken seriously.

“It’s a bit strange,” Mr Howden said.

“It’s not likely that he was going to burn the house down.”

The soon to graduate student received a six-month good behaviour bond and was ordered to pay $300 restitution for damages.

No conviction was recorded.
