A Logan concreter who choked his partner until she could not speak and grabbed her by the hair, has been jailed by a court for the frightening attack.

Bruce William Matthews, 54, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh District Court on February 10, 2023 to choking and common assault (domestic violence offences).

The court heard that Matthews, from Woodridge, had an argument with his partner on March 4 last year in Logan Central.

The victim woke to discover Matthews loudly opening cabinets and complaining of a medical issue with his pancreas.

The court heard she began walking down the stairs then Matthews grabbed her by her ponytail and pulled her away.

He then put his left arm around her throat and said “I’m dying and you’re coming with me”.

Matthews moved in front of her and placed his hand on her throat again as she tried to scream but could not make a sound.

The victim told the court she experienced immense emotional and physical harm and felt she was lucky to get out alive.

The court heard Matthews had a long standing drug addiction and was in a toxic, volatile relationship with the victim.

Prosecution said Matthew’s lengthy criminal history demonstrated a disregard for the law.

Judge Jodie Wooldridge KC said Matthews had a troubling history before the courts.

“He has a long history of violent, anti-social behaviour,” she said.

Matthews was sentenced to two years in prison, immediately released on parole after serving 343 days in pre-sentence custody.
