Levi Petera: Beenleigh man jailed for robbing Cash King twice

A young Logan man will be behind bars until well into the new year after pleading guilty to two brazen thefts a week apart.

A young Logan man who was chroming and homeless after a clash with his father broke into a popular Beenleigh pawnbroker twice in consecutive weekends, smashing glass to gain access and plundering its wares.

Beenleigh man Levi Lance Petera, 20, appeared in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Wednesday via videolink, charged with two counts of entering premises by break and committing an indictable offence.

The court heard both offences were committed on April 13 and April 20 last year, when Petera broke into the Cash King pawnbroker on Main Rd.

Police prosecutor Sgt Donna Cole told the court “quite a large amount of property” was stolen on both occasions, although it could not be quantified in dollar figures.

Petera was arrested on September 15 last year on other, more serious property offences, and has remained behind bars since.

In August of this year, Petera was sentenced in the District Court to six years’ jail for those other offences, with a parole eligibility of March 15, 2021.

Defence lawyer Raquel Brehmer told the court the offences were all precipitated by Petera “leaving his father’s house” due to a conflict, leading to the young man “living on the street… and chroming”.

She said a psychological report commissioned by the courts revealed he had “low intelligence” and was “very immature”.

Magistrate Clare Kelly jailed Petera for six months and set his parole eligibility date the same day of his District Court sentence, March 15.
