A new grandmother has had to celebrate the birth of her first grandchild from behind bars after she was jailed for committing crimes to feed her and her partner’s drug addiction.

Kingston resident, Rebecca Sharne Hyndman, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on 10 charges including possession of dangerous drugs, shoplifting and failing to appear in court several times.

From September, 2021 to March 30, 2022, the 41-year-old stole $400-worth of Woolworths items including groceries and phone accessories and was suspected to have stolen clothing from a retail store, the court heard.

She was caught on two occasions to be in possession of less than 1g of methamphetamines at the same time.

“She does seem to have some drug issues,” police prosecutor, Sergeant Donna Kay, said.

Ms Hyndman's lawyer, David Gilmore, said his client committed those offences in order to fund her and her boyfriend’s addiction.

“He pushed her to commit those offences to fund their heroin dependency,” he said.

The defendant failed to appear in court on three occasions dating from December last year to March for previous charges.

“If she was locked up she wouldn’t be unable to provide the heroin for him,” Mr Gilmore said.

“He was a violent person and would exercise control over you,’’ Magistrate Louise Shepherd said.

Ms Hyndman, who appeared in court via video link, said her injections to help with her addiction made her feel healthier.

“I’ve never felt like this”, Ms Hyndman said.

Ms Hyndman appeared emotional in court and cried about the news of her first grandchild.

“I just had a granddaughter a couple of days ago,” she said.

Magistrate Shepherd said she encouraged Ms Hyndman to reconnect with her family.

“You’ve got some clarity of the mind now, you will have the will to stay on that path and hopefully be able to have a stable relationship with your children,” she said.

Ms Hyndman was convicted and had her six-month sentence suspended for 18 months.
