A Logan man has been told to curb his drug habits after the death of his niece who was allegedly drugged and killed last year.

Kingston’s Joshua James Nelson, 37, pleaded guilty in Cleveland Magistrates Court on Monday, November 14, to more than 30 offences including unlawful possession of weapons, possessing of dangerous drugs, explosives, stealing, failing to comply with the duties of a driver involved in a crash and several other traffic-related offences.

Nelson’s lawyer, Brittany White, said her client had been struggling mentally during the time of the offending.

“His 18-year-old niece was drugged and died last year, my client had to be the person to switch off her life support,” Ms White said.

“He went on a downward spiral because of that.

“Drugs have been my client’s main issue.”

Magistrate Deborah Vasta said she thought the death of Nelson’s niece would be the end of his offending.

“You’d think the death of your niece would turn you around, that out of respect and love for her you may decide to turn your back on drugs,” Ms Vasta said.

“Going to people’s houses and stealing their guns and motorbikes is not okay.”

The court heard a brain tumour had been discovered in Nelson’s head.

“Maybe your medical issues will turn your attitude around,” Ms Vasta said.

She dismissed claims in a statement written by Nelson‘s mother which was tendered to the court.

“That’s just absolute rubbish,” Ms Vasta said.

“You lied all through the statements.

“I think you are accustomed to lying.

“I don’t agree with your mum’s statement that you own up to everything you do.”

Nelson was given a head sentence of 18 months, with immediate parole release.

He was disqualified from driving for six months.

Convictions were recorded.
