An Alexandra Hills concreter who slapped his partner twice in an effort to stop her allegedly abusing drugs was jailed for 263 days, a court has heard.

Joshua David Bean, 26, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh District Court on December 13, 2022 to assault occasioning bodily harm (domestic violence offence).

The court heard that in the early morning on December 28, 2021 Bean got into a heated argument with the victim over her alleged drug use.

He told her to get off drugs and then slapped her before she took the car keys and attempted to drive away.

Bean was allegedly punched by the victim in the scuffle and he responded by grabbing her around the neck and putting her in a chokehold.

She then took Bean’s car keys and phone and left the home.

Judge Craig Chowdhury said domestic violence was a serious issue and Bean’s behaviour was not appropriate.

“There is a massive problem with domestic violence in our society and it seems to be getting worse,” he said.

“You should keep your hands to yourself. You cannot resort to violence.”

Bean was sentenced to 263 days of prison and had already served that time.
