A 29-year-old Shailer Park man told a two-year-old child boy he stunk before spraying a can of deodorant in his eyes at close range during a disturbing assault on a “defenseless child”.

Jordan Anthony Hamilton Rodwell, 29, pleaded guilty to two counts of common assault in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Monday.

The court heard Rodwell became annoyed after a two-year-old child known to him didn’t seem to like the food he had offered and pushed the boy from a couch with enough force to make him fall face first on the floor.

The child’s mother, who saw the incident, could not find any injuries on her son’s body.

Rodwell later returned to them and got out a can of purple Lynx deodorant and began spraying it excessively around himself while near the child.

The mother told him to stop spraying the deodorant so close to the child and Rodwell turned to the child and told him he stunk.

He held the deodorant can 5cm away from the child’s face and sprayed it into his eyes and face.

The mother called the police and observed the child blinking as he could not properly see momentarily.

Rodwell, who represented himself in court, said he agreed with the facts and that “there’s nothing else to be told.”

Magistrate Michael O’Driscoll described the incident as a “serious matter against a defenseless child.”

He was sentenced to a six-month suspended sentence for an operational period of two years.
