A Wynnum man found asleep behind the wheel of a stolen car while on high on drugs says his time in custody has taken its toll, a court has heard.

Harold Hopkins, 27, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Thursday to charges including four counts of obstructing police, being in charge of a vehicle while under the influence of a drug and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

The court heard Hopkins was found asleep behind the wheel of a stolen car while under the influence of drugs in Eagleby on December 17 last year.

Four police officers attempted to apprehend him, but he was resistant and obstructed them.

Police also busted Hopkins for receiving tainted property, namely vehicle keys, four bicycles, a wallet with personal cards and a handbag in Bardon between December 3-6 last year.

The court heard he used one of the stolen personal cards to make three purchases.

Hopkins’ lawyer told the court his client grew up with a mother who had a substance misuse problem and turned to drugs himself to deal with feelings of isolation during his childhood at Mt Tamborine.

She said Hopkins’ time in custody had “taken a toll on him” while coming to grips with some family struggles while inside.

Magistrate Ron Kilner said his childhood didn’t excuse why he was still committing such serious offences as an adult.

He was sentenced to seven months imprisonment with an immediate parole release date, and the 83 days he spent in pre-sentence custody was declared time served. He was disqualified from driving for 12 months.
