A 28-year-old Meadowbrook man who threatened to kill his father and family dog, while hurling abuse at his mother has faced Beenleigh Magistrates Court.

The court heard the defendant, a former pro-surfer, spat in his mother’s face, swore at her and picked up and dropped the family dog.

He also threatened to kill the dog and punched his father before threatening to murder him.

The defendant’s legal counsel noted he was heavily under the influence of alcohol at the time, an addiction he had been grappling with for several years.

The Meadowbrook man also punched a wall of the Beenleigh Police Station and was fined $600 for damages.

The defendant received an 18 month suspended prison sentence for charges of contravention of domestic violence order and wilfully damaging police property.

The court heard the defendant at age 14 was a professional surfer and was introduced to drugs by his mentors in the sport.

He heavily used cannabis, LSD, mushrooms and MDMA.

The defendant developed mental health disorders including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and post traumatic stress disorder and this was where his reliance on alcohol began.

Magistrate Ronald Kilner said the defendant had a loving family and his behaviour was deplorable and disgraceful.

“That’s not the way to treat people who love you,” he said.

“Alcohol seems to be a serious and complicated problem for you. You are not before the court on drug or alcohol related charges but they have affected your conduct.

“You would know from the first taste of alcohol that you put to your lips that you are doing the wrong thing for yourself and your family.

“That means you need to abstain from alcohol completely.”

The defendant pleaded guilty to two counts of contravention of a domestic violence order and wilful damage of police property.

He received an 18 month suspended prison sentence and a $600 fine.
