Dylan Samuel Condrit, 26, of Loganlea sentenced for attempted and successful carjackings

A tradie in mourning left chaos in his wake when he pretended to be a cop to carjack multiple stunned service station customers – his mayhem didn’t end there …

A “drug-addled” construction worker caused chaos at a southeast Queensland service station when, pretending to be a cop, he tried to carjack two vehicles before he yanked a Domino’s delivery driver out of his car, only to spectacularly crash.

Appearing at Beenleigh District Court on Wednesday, Dylan Samuel Condrit, 26, of Underwood pleaded guilty to a string of charges.

They included dangerous operation of a vehicle, robbery, unlawful use of a vehicle, unlawful entry of a vehicle for committing an indictable offence or threatening violence, and two attempted counts of the latter charge.

The court heard Condrit was drunk on vodka and high on drugs when at around 8pm on August 7, 2021 he left multiple victims and witnesses shocked at a BP service station on Logan Rd in Underwood.

According to police, he first walked up to a Mitsubishi Lancer, kicked its boot and told its occupant to, “f*****g open the door”.

The driver refused and drove off.

He next confronted a man who had purchased two bottles of soft drink and claimed he was a police officer.

The court heard he said: “I’m a f*****g police officer; I’ve got a badge in my wallet; give me your f****n car keyes … Well, give me your f****n drink then.”

When the man told him to “f**k off”, Condrit grabbed the bottles out of his hands, swung a punch at the victim and threw one of the drink bottles at him.

Some 10 minutes later he approached a female driver in a Toyota Camry while shouting,

“It’s the police, it’s the police”, according to the prosecution.

The woman managed to drive off.

His offending culminated when he moved onto a Domino’s pizza delivery driver in a Toyota Yaris.

He told the man, “I’m the police; I need this vehicle right now; get out”.

When the driver asked for identification, Condrit flashed his phone and pulled the victim out of the car by his arm.

The court heard the driver had to undo his own seatbelt to avoid injury.

Condrit performed a U-turn and drove south bound toward Underwood Marketplace Shopping Centre.

The court heard he swerved in and out of traffic without indicating while speeding, and at times veered into oncoming traffic.

The fiasco ended when he suddenly swerved across two lanes some 2km from the service station and crashed into traffic lights in the middle of a road.

Multiple witnesses called police.

Condrit ran from the scene and was arrested by a police dog squad nearby, the court was told.

Crown prosecutor Ayesha Black said the offending was aggravated by a six-page criminal history featuring violence and actual terms of imprisonment.

The court heard in 2015 the defendant kneed and spat in the face of a police officer who rendered him medical assistance for a significant gash he had suffered.

Condrit had served 319 days in pre-sentence custody by June 21, the court was told.

Defence barrister Troy Spence said his client worked on and off in construction and had been kicked out of his step-grandfather’s home following a drug relapse.

Mr Spence said Condrit fell off the wagon after his father died shortly after reuniting with him.

According to the defence, their client’s offending on the day was “erratic”, “opportunistic”, “low level” and resulted in no injury.

However, Mr Spence acknowledged the victims would have “absolutely” been frightened.

Judge Craig Chowdhury denounced Condrit’s behaviour as “serious and concerted offending of about half an hour”.

“This is very serious offending,” Mr Chowdhury said.

“You were clearly in an unfit state; you were aggressive to the complainant who you robbed of his soft drink.

“You are very lucky you didn’t kill yourself, let alone anyone else.”

With 319 days’ pre-sentence custody declared time served, Condrit was sentenced to three years’ prison, and granted an August 6 parole release date.

He was further disqualified from driving for 12 months.
