Dylan Patrick Shepherd, 20, pleaded guilty to one count of possessing 642 grams of cannabis, drug quantity of or exceeding schedule 3.

The court heard police located a stolen vehicle at Slacks Creek, with Shepherd and two juvenile offenders as the occupants.

Shepherd was not charged with involvement in the stolen car.

A Prosecutor told the court that officers could smell cannabis as they approached the car.

“Shepherd told police he had no knowledge of the cannabis and later accepted it was for personal use,” a Prosecutor said.

“(The cannabis was) Hidden in a grocery bag in the footwall,” she said.

A defence barrister said Shepherd is a new father and has a long history of working in concreting and construction.

“While he denied any knowledge of cannabis he did ultimately enter a guilty plea and was 19,” he said.

Judge Craig Chowdhury warned Shepherd of the side effects, triggers and mental illness cannabis can cause.

“The Maximum penalty is 20 years of prison, given the quantity and that it was for personal use,” Judge Chowdhury said.

“Drug offending is prevalent in our community.

“Obviously now you have new responsibilities and have relocated to New South Wales to start a new life,” he said.

Shepherd was sentenced to serve a one year good behaviour bond.

No convictions were recorded.
