A Logan mother has paid tribute to her “unique and precious” baby boy Jasper, who passed away from rare lung and heart complications after turning blue at a restaurant several weeks ago.

Claire Dobb spoke out about her terror after Jasper fell ill on January 6 at Eagleby Tavern during a family outing.

He underwent emergency surgery, which had only a fifty per cent survival rate, but sadly passed away on January 25.

The Dobb family was enjoying then six-week-old Jasper’s first lunch outing at the tavern when the nightmare unfolded.

Ms Dobb said Jasper was born with uniparental disomy of chromosome 13, a rare condition that affects one in one million children.

But he had been given the all clear from a hospital neonatal unit to be able to be taken outside.

“While I was pregnant we discovered he was born with two of my chromosomes and one of my husband Josh’s,’’ she said.

“His body expelled the wrong extra chromosome and as a result he was born with two of my chromosome 13s, one lung and a compromised artery around his heart.

“He came home after 17 days in the intensive care unit and we kept him inside until last Saturday, when we felt comfortable enough to take him to his first restaurant and out for the first time.’’

Ms Dobb said she was first alerted to an issue at the restaurant as Jasper began to cry and, when fed, did not settle.

“His mouth started to turn purple and as we undressed him we saw his whole body was a mottled bright red,” Ms Dobb said.

“I screamed as Josh called an ambulance and the manager came over, who completely took over as I started to blank … she was incredible.

“She put him on the ground, counted his breaths like the paramedics told us to and minutes later he was taken to the Queensland Children’s Hospital.’’

Doctors discovered Jasper suffered a viral infection, which caused him to turn blue, and after antibiotics was expected to recover and return home the following Thursday.

However, Jasper was kept in hospital when his condition deteriorated on January 18.

Doctors discovered a denaturation in his oxygen levels and he was put back on a feeding tube and was closely monitored.

On Tuesday January 23, Jasper was placed in intensive care as his body was failing to produce oxygen and an obstruction was found in his lung.

“Last night (Tuesday) he underwent a six-hour operation with a 50 per cent chance of survival, this happened because he only has the one lung and his entire heart had shifted to the other side, they’ve completed the surgery and managed to put a patch in his lung,” Ms Dobb said.

She said surgeons identified Jasper’s whole anatomy as “different”.

“They had to leave his chest open for the next few days for swelling,” she said.

The family have started a GoFundMe page to support their expenses while they find a way to cope.

“We will be forever grateful for the nine weeks he gave us,’’ she said.

“I will forever fight to be strong for you my baby boy... I will miss you every single day.

“No parent should ever have to experience what we have and we are both extremely fragile and traumatised from this event,” she said.
