A Logan father left his two children, aged 5 and 8, unattended after smashing up his house while drunk then roaming the streets with a knife.

Beenleigh Magistrates Court heard on Thursday that the 32-year-old Woodridge man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the children, was heavily drunk on October 9 last year.

He destroyed his home in Jericho, Central Queensland while the children were inside.

At the scene he told Police he “smashed up the house, picked up a baby seat and through it through the window.”

The estimated property damages were $2,500.

The court heard he then roamed the streets holding a knife and when arrested by police, was abrasive and aggressive with them.

While in the back of the police van he said his kids were still at home.

The children were left unattended for more than two hours.

The man pleaded guilty to leaving children under 12 unattended, possession of a knife, public nuisance and wilful damage.

Magistrate Mark Howden said the man clearly had issues related to alcohol abuse.

“This is terrible behaviour and you were very drunk,” he said.

“You’re lucky you are not going to jail for some serious time.”

The father of two was sentenced to six months prison with an immediate parole release date.
