A Logan man has begged a court for mercy after assaulting his ex-partner and her child in a brutal premeditated attack.

The Crestmead resident, 37, who cannot be named, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh Magistrates Court yesterday (June 23) to 17 offences, including three counts of assault, as well as driving and drug offences.

The man went to a Crestmead address on March 4 where he assaulted his former partner and her 13-year-old child, the court heard.

“He’s gone out his way to find her and assault her. This is incredibly premeditated,” police prosecutor Tahlia Boettcher said.

“He’s then punched her several times. He’s then used a rock and fractured the child’s finger.”

“It’s a horrific attack.”

The court heard another woman was assaulted in the attack, before a courier driver showed up and the man left.

“That child has had to witness an attack against a family member, and then against herself,” Ms Boettcher said.

The man's lawyer, Renee Smith, said her client was remorseful for his actions.

“He was on drugs at the time and he was paranoid and controlling towards her,” Ms Smith said.

“He’s obviously remorseful for his behaviour and understands that it is not acceptable.”

The Crestmead resident said that he wanted to be out in the community as soon as possible.

“I can’t progress in the jail, all the help is in the community,” he said.

“I don’t want to be in jail for the rest of my life.”

Magistrate Clare Kelly said his actions were distressing.

“You sent texts saying you were going to assault her, you threatened to kick her head in when you found her and (said) that she was ‘dead’,” Ms Kelly said.

“It would have been distressing to receive those messages.”

He received a head sentence of 18 months’ jail for three counts of assault, three months’ prison for stealing, six months for receiving tainted property, 12 months for unlawful use of a vehicle, three months for possession of dangerous drugs, six months for unlawful possession of suspected stolen property, and six months for a using carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence.

All sentences were concurrent.

He was convicted but not further punished for driving unsupervised and failing to display learner plates.

A parole release date was set at August 7, with a 13-month parole period.
