A 29-year-old man who stole his mother’s car and debit card to make fraudulent purchases has been granted immediate parole release.

Corey Robert Atkin of Waterford West was supported by his mother when he appeared at Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Friday (June 10).

The warehouse worker pleaded guilty to unlawful use of a vehicle and two counts of fraud, among other charges.

The court heard Atkin stole his mother’s car on April 18 and made two fraudulent purchases with her stolen debit card, totalling $55.90.

It came on the back of a three-page criminal and two-page traffic history.

Police prosecutor Tim Wise said Atkin was in 2018 sentenced to 18 months’ probation and on March 16, 2021 sentenced to six months’ jail with immediate parole release for other offending.

Atkin’s defence solicitor said his client was determined to deal with his “underlying issues” by entering a live-in rehabilitation service upon his release from custody.

The court heard the defendant was also under the care of a psychiatrist and suffered from ADHD and bipolar disorder.

Magistrate Terry Duroux noted no confirmation documentation for the diagnoses could be provided.

Atkin was sentenced to nine months’ prison and granted immediate parole release.

A total of 52 days in pre-sentence custody was declared time served.
