The pressure will be taken off one of the state’s busiest hospital emergency departments when a $33 million specialist care centre opens south of Brisbane early next year.
Construction started this week on the Logan Urgent and Specialist Care Centre at Meadowbrook on Nestor Dr, within walking distance to the Logan Hospital, Logan Heart Centre and Loganlea train station.
The centre, which is expected to bulk bill, will include a minor injury and illness clinic along with a women’s health outpatient centre providing gynaecology and antenatal services.
When completed in early 2024, it will have 12 urgent care spaces, 31 specialist outpatient consulting rooms and five ultrasound imaging rooms.
Original plans for the site also included a range of specialist services including oncology, renal dialysis, radiology, orthodontics and day hospital.
Federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers, whose Rankin electorate takes in parts of Logan, said the centre was designed to ease pressure on Logan Hospital’s emergency department and give local women easier access to quality care.
He said it would help shoulder some of the medical burden for the hospital as the local population grows.
“It will be a gamechanger for the area,” he said.
“More people realise everything this region has to offer and to keep pace with demand, we need to invest in new infrastructure.
“It will mean better healthcare, quicker and closer to home for thousands of people in our community.
“The people of Logan and surrounding areas deserve the same access to timely, high-quality care that’s available in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne and through this project, we’re helping to deliver it.”
Once up and running, the centre will bring an extra 60 health professionals into the area.
Logan City Council approved the four-storey medical centre and day hospital as part of its plan to transform Meadowbrook into a medical precinct to support the hospital.
