A Logan mum accused of entering a woman’s home, stealing from her handbag, and taking off with her car blew a kiss to the back of the courtroom as a magistrate denied her request for bail.
Chloe Victoria Campbell, 20, of Woodridge appeared in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Monday (July 25) charged with five offences.
They included two counts of unlawful use of a vehicle, one count of entering a dwelling and committing an indictable offence, and one count of robbery.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Wendy Moman told the court the “brazen” robbery Campbell was accused of committing was of most concern.
“The victim was actually present. It’s almost like a carjacking situation,” Sgt Moman said.
“The victim was holding a child at the time – a very infant child – and she allegedly fell to the ground. The defendant denies that.”
She said Campbell had made “partial admissions” but did downplay the severity of the alleged offending.
She also noted the 20-year-old had a history of breaching bail conditions.
The court heard Campbell was on a 18-month probation order, had a one-year-old child and was 13 weeks’ pregnant.
She had previously received a diagnosis of schizophrenia and was recently homeless for about a month.
Sgt Moman said Campbell was charged with entering a dwelling and committing an indictable offence after she made her way into a woman’s Beenleigh home on July 15.
“The offender’s entered the victim’s bedroom and searched her handbag, finding the keys to (her) vehicle,” she said.
“The offender’s proceeded outside to where the vehicle was parked and took the car using the keys.
“The victim’s son heard the car start and went outside to see what was happening and saw the vehicle being reversed onto the road and driven away from the address.”
Police intercepted the vehicle at Woodridge soon after and the driver identified herself as Campbell, the court heard.
Magistrate Michael O’Driscoll acknowledged a number of factors, including the seriousness of the charges before the court, before deciding Campbell posed an “unacceptable” risk of not appearing in court when required, or of committing further offences.
He refused her application for bail and adjourned the matter to Beenleigh Magistrates Court for committal mention on September 26.
Campbell blew a kiss from the dock to a person seated at the back of the court as she was escorted out.
