A Brisbane man has revealed he plans to contest 23 charges in court, the most serious pertaining to allegedly attempting to bash his neighbour’s door with an axe as part of a long-running feud.
He also allegedly stalked his female bail officer over a seven-month period.
Antun Ivan Zaknic, 39 of Brisbane, was arrested in October 2020 and charged with unlawfully stalking a senior constable at Springwood Police Station and breach of bail condition.
Mr Zaknic revealed his plans to contest the charges in the district court during an mention in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Friday, July 7, 2022.
The court also heard Mr Zaknic’s legal representation had withdrawn, and that so far he had been unable to obtain any legal aid.
His other charges included multiple breaches of bail conditions, serious assault of a person over 60, common assault, going armed so as to cause fear, multiple traffic offences, and obstructing police.
The court previously heard Mr Zaknic was convicted of stalking, and he allegedly began stalking the female senior constable in April 2020.
The court heard between April 2020 and his arrest in October 2020, Mr Zaknic allegedly left “handwritten notes” on the woman’s car, sent her Facebook friend requests, attempted to message and audio call her through Facebook’s Messenger function up to six times a week. He also allegedly asked other officers at the station whether she had a boyfriend.
The alleged contents of some of the messages were read onto the public record at Beenleigh Magistrates Court in October 2020.
“Do you have a boyfriend?” Mr Zaknic is said to have asked.
“If not, can I get to know you?”
It was also reported that his phone allegedly contained photos of the senior constable screenshotted from her Facebook.
The court previously heard details of Mr Zaknic’s other alleged offending, including alleged offences against a family who lived across the road from him.
He allegedly assaulted a 61-year-old mother by pushing her in her chest, stood in his front yard with a “10-inch knife” gesturing at their home, tried to break down their front door with an axe while the father tried desperately to block the door from within, and arrived at the daughter’s work at a Woolworths supermarket and stared at her until she escaped to the staffroom, the court heard.
Mr Zaknic will face Beenleigh Magistrates Court again on August 5.
