A dispute between a married couple turned violent when a wife returned from the kitchen with a frying pan of hot cooking oil and splashed it on her husband’s face, a court has heard.

Kieu Tran, 39, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh District Court to one count of assault occasioning bodily harm with a weapon (domestic violence offence).

The court heard that on October 2, 2021, Tran, from Chambers Flat was frying chicken in her kitchen about 9am and had an argument with her husband, telling him he is “not a good person”.

Her husband was laying in bed and Tran took the frying pan to the bedroom and poured hot cooking oil over his face and body then hit him with the pan.

The victim ran from the house and splashed himself with water on the road to ease the pain.

The court heard Tran’s husband of two years was taken to Logan Hospital and sustained serious burns, blisters and minor scarring to his back.

Judge Craig Chowdhury said the injuries could have been more severe.

“This is a very serious offence and you could have caused even more damage,” he said.

“You might have been angry and upset but you can’t do that.”

Tran received a 12 month suspended prison sentence and a conviction was recorded.
