A popular cinema that has served as a community hub for the Logan community has announced its shock closure.
Browns Plains Event Cinema is due to screen its final film on Monday September 26 2024, leaving the community saddened by the news.
Event Cinemas has been contacted for comment.
The move comes after Majestic Cinemas, an independent operator of nine Queensland and NSW theatres, announced in February that it had gone into voluntary liquidation.
Administrators later confirmed its Wynnum cinema would close but the developer of the building quickly stepped in to reopen it and run it themselves.
The reason for the Browns Plains closure was not known but cinema chains have battled a lack of fresh content, partiularly Hollywood blockbusters, since the Covid-19 lockdown.
Many cinemagoers battling the cost of living crisis have also complained at steep charges for tickets, food and drink at some chains.
Nat Miller, the administrator of a Logan mother’s group, said she had worked with the cinema for seven years organising private screenings for mothers and children.
“This is the saddest news of all to say goodbye to,” Ms Miller said.
“They will close their doors not to be reopened.
“I think (the private screenings) have been as enjoyable for our parents as well as our children,” she said.
A Logan mother said the news was devastating for the community.
“I saw my first ever movie here when I was four years old,” a mother said.
“Everywhere is closing, the plaza will never be the same.
“There will be much less traffic at the centre now,” she said.
Another mother said her family loved this location for their cheap ticket prices.
“It was a great family day out that didn’t break the bank.
