Fears a new cinema on Brisbane’s bayside would close for good just three years after its long-awaited opening have been eased with new operators revealed as the venue prepares to relaunch next month.

The original operators in Majestic Cinemas announced the closure of their Wynnum location, on Berrima St, earlier this month after going into voluntary administration.

Two of the company’s New South Wales locations in Singleton and Nelson Bay were also closed.

But after saying he believed a cinema in Wynnum was viable after the Majestic closure, the owner of the venue, Justin Ham, has revealed the newly named Bayside Cinema was scheduled to reopen within the next month.

Mr Ham said The Smitham Group, who also own The Waterloo Bay Hotel and Gumdale Tavern, will independently operate the cinema, which he believed was an integral part of the entertainment scene in Wynnum and Manly.

He also confirmed he had retained staff and relationships with movie distributors and was excited for what the future holds.

“While we know streaming platforms have heavily impacted ticket sales in cinemas everywhere, reducing the price of movie tickets for moviegoers was just the beginning of some exciting changes we intend to make,” he said.

“I’d be pretty keen to not only see Wynnum Manly locals but people from all around the bayside fall in love with the experience of going to a cinema again.

“Although there’s no official reopening date just yet, the Bayside Cinema plans to be serving you chocolate tops and Hollywood blockbusters by the end of March.”

The original Wynnum Cinema was opened in March, 2021 with the hype around the venue, which locals had been demanding for decades, including a launch party attended by the likes of ‘The King’ Wally Lewis and several other celebrities.

The cinema sits at the bottom of the Lato Baia residential complex.
