A dedicated volunteer from Beaudesert charged with disturbing child sex offences abused his ‘position of trust’ by using manipulations and gifts to prey upon multiple children, a court has heard.

Brody Allan Murphy, 23, pleaded guilty in district court at Beenleigh on Friday to more than 30 counts of indecent treatment of a child under 12, three counts of maintaining a sexual relationship with a child and one count of attempted rape.

The court heard Murphy committed offences against six children over different periods, including one incident where he indecently assaulted two children at one time.

During his most serious offending, Murphy maintained a two and a half year-long sexual relationship with a boy aged 9-11 at the time while he was aged 18-20.

The court heard the interactions include Murphy orally raping the child among other sexual acts.

That offending conduct occurred about once every week or every two weeks during the two-and-a-half year period.

The court heard on one occasion, Murphy attempted to anally rape the child.

He also orally raped him while another child aged between 12-13 was present, who he also indecently assaulted.

Judge Jackson said Murphy’s conduct was predatory in nature.

“You were clearly in a position of power and trust, and you have grossly abused that trust placed in you,” he said.

“You manipulated opportunities to be alone with (these children).”

“You would buy them gifts from time to time.”

Murphy’s lawyer said his client was a man of low average IQ with a personal history that suggested exposure to trauma at an early age.

He said his client had spent years volunteering for the Queensland State Emergency Service, where he received awards in relation to that.

Murphy was sentenced to eight-and-a-half years imprisonment with a parole release date on August 18, 2023.

The 737 days he spent in pre-sentence custody was declared time served. Convictions were recorded.

Following the sentencing, a visibly upset family member of one of the victims yelled out, “He’s a monster!” to Murphy as he was escorted from the dock in custody.
