A Brisbane man has been slammed by a magistrate after assaulting his former partner as she held their baby.

The 25-year-old Wakerly man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Wednesday, March 22, to one count of contravening a domestic violence order, two counts of obstructing a police officer and one count of driving while disqualified by a court order.

The court heard the man slapped his ex-partner while she was holding their baby.

“It’s a serious example of domestic violence,” police prosecutor Sergeant Stephen Cochran said.

“It’s a serious offence and should attract a serious penalty.”

The Wakerly man was also caught driving unlicensed after he was disqualified by a court order.

“This will be his seventh conviction of disqualified driving,” Sergeant Cochran said.

His lawyer, Daniel McShane, said his client suffered from “a host of mental health issues” and that the relationship had since ended.

Magistrate Pamela Dowse said the young father continued to disobey court orders.

“It’s abhorrent behaviour,” Ms Dowse said.

“He doesn’t follow any orders.

“Your behaviour is most unacceptable.

“You can’t behave like that, it’s outrageous, especially since she had a child in her arms.

“It’s absolutely despicable.”

He was convicted and sentenced to nine months jail, suspended for 16 months for the contravention of a domestic violence order.

For obstructing police he was convicted and sentenced to three months, suspended for 16 months.

For driving while disqualified he was sentenced to 12 months jail, suspended for 16 months.

He was disqualified for two years from driving.

Convictions were recorded.
