A Logan hairdresser was charged by police for allegedly drugging and raping a woman while recording it, then sending it to her ex-partners, a court has heard.

Bevan John Backwell, 45, applied for bail in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on June 27.

The Beenleigh hairdresser was charged with rape, stupefying in order to commit an indictable offence, observations or recordings in breach of privacy, distributing intimate images and distributing prohibited visual recordings.

Police alleged that Mr Backwell drugged a woman in Beenleigh then sexually assaulted her while filming it on her phone.

He then allegedly sent the recording to three ex-boyfriends of hers.

The court heard the alleged victim had made a formal statement to police and provided them with medical evidence of the alleged rape.

The court heard Mr Backwell had a minor criminal history and was a qualified hairdresser.

The police prosecutor told the court it was a strong Crown case and there were no bail conditions that could lessen the risk of releasing Mr Blackwell.

But defence lawyer Findlay Weston said the charges would be contested and it would take years to be allocated a trial date.

“These charges are being contested with the scope of that contest relating to issues of consent and a capacity to consent,” he said.

“The timeframe of a defendant getting a trial in Beenleigh is unfortunately out to years, so there is a real risk of my client serving too much time in custody.”

Magistrate Patrina Clohessy refused bail.

“He’s charged with a number of serious offences including rape and observations or recording in breach of privacy,” Ms Clohessy said.

“The allegations are he drugged the victim then sexually abused her while she was unconscious, recorded it on her phone then shared the video.

“He has no history of issues with bail compliance but bail is refused.”

The matter was adjourned to August 2 for mention in Beenleigh Magistrates Court.

A brief of evidence was ordered which was due by August 1.
