A BARNSTORMING back-rower once touted as the next Gorden Tallis is among three of the Souths Logan Magpies’ signings for 2016.

Caleb Timu, a Logan junior, has been aligned to the Magpies after returning to the Brisbane Broncos following a two-year Mormon mission.

Timu will be joined at the club by Sam Scarlett, a skilful halfback out of the Penrith Panthers under-20s who has also signed with the Broncos and hulking prop Herman Ese’ese, who played one NRL game with the Canterbury Bulldogs.

Club president Jim McClelland said he was excited to see the three signings pull on the Magpies jersey.

“Caleb was an outstanding junior who came through our club. He’s very hungry to play and is going to be a massive bonus to have in our side,” McClelland said.

“Sam Scarlett came highly recommended from Wayne Bennett so you can’t really get higher praise than that.

“He’s got a tough gig at the Broncos with (Anthony Milford and Ben Hunt) in the halves but he understands that and will give it a good crack.

“Herman is a high end player with great potential who is good mates with Caleb.

“He’s a great acquisition because players like him rarely come on the market.”

As well as the signings of Timu, Scarlett and Ese’ese, Savern Rapana, whose brother Jordan is a Canberra Raider, has signed with the Magpies.

Former Souths Logan junior and 2014 FOGS Colts Player of the Year Ben Jackson has also rejoined the Magpies following a stint in France.

“We’ve got a good squad in place now,” McClelland said.
