A young Logan family is grieving the tragic loss of their unborn baby Sekani who loved ones say was ‘an angel destined for greatness’, following a serious traffic crash south of Brisbane over the weekend.

The devastating head-on collision between two vehicles on Saturday evening claimed the life of Sekani and left his mother Kristen Barker, 25, in hospital with serious injuries. Her eight-year-old step son Kairon was also seriously injured, but her two year old son who was also in the car was uninjured.

Early crash investigations suggested a Subaru Forrester was travelling west on Chambers Flat Rd, in Logan, about 5.30pm before crossing into the path of a Toyota RAV4 and colliding head-on.

The 25-year-old male Subaru driver was the father of unborn baby Sekani and eight-year-old Kairon, and he suffered minor injuries.

The driver and sole occupant of the Toyota, a 44-year-old woman, was also transported to hospital in a serious condition; where she remains.

A close friend of Ms Barker said the family was absolutely devastated.

Rebbeka Collins, also from Logan, said Ms Barker and her family deserve endless love.

“She deserves all the love and support in the world,” Ms Collins said.

“She is such a beautiful and kind woman.

“This family went through a traumatic and life changing accident. The family and their two children were involved in a head on collision claiming the life of their eight month gestational baby.

“The loss of a child for most of us is inconceivable let alone being so close to giving birth, this has taken a great toll on the family and our entire community.”

Baby Sekani was born at 4.30am on Sunday morning weighing in at 2369 grams.

“With a curly head of dark hair, the cutest little nose and 10 perfect little fingers and 10 perfect little toes,” Ms Collins said.

“Sekani means joy and this baby boy was a celebrated joy in the lives of this family.

“As we mourn for the loss of Sekani we reflect on the type of person he was going to grow up to be and can’t help but feel the world has suffered a great loss as this angel was destined for greatness.”

Ms Collins has created a Go Fund Me page for the family.

“We are asking for funds to help with funeral costs to lay this sweet angel to rest and let the family focus on grieving and supporting one another,” she said.

A Go Fund Me page has also been created by the Shaley Schuh to help cover medical costs for eight-year-old Kairon, who was also in the car. Ms Schuh said she was a friend of Kairon’s mum Rebekah.

It is understood Kairon has just woken up from a coma.

“On Saturday the 9th of October, Rebekah got the worst phone call a young mother could get, Your son has been involved in a head on accident and has been transported to the Children’s Hospital,” she said.

“The accident has left with serious injuries, needing emergency surgery, and constant ongoing medical assistance seeing being supported and comfortable to manage daily requirements.

“Rebekah and her partner Justin have had to take an unknown amount of time off work to support in this very traumatic time, causing them to no longer be financially secure.

“Luckily enough Rebekah’s mother Vicky is able to look after his little brother during this tragic time.”

Police investigations into the crash are ongoing.
