In an attempt to smuggle in drugs for her prisoner husband, a 27-year-old Marsden woman was found by police with almost 500 buprenorphine (opioid) strips, worth a street value of $35,000.

Amira Naaman pleaded guilty in Beenleigh District Court on December 1 to five counts of supplying a dangerous drug, one count of possessing a dangerous drug and one count of possessing anything used in connecting with supplying a dangerous drug.

The court heard that on March 24, 2021, Queensland Police arrested Naaman at her home in Marsden and discovered 468 buprenorphine strips and a mobile phone containing five conversations indicating drug dealing.

There was also a letter found which had instructions on how to send drugs into prison and evidence on the phone she had sold 100 strips for $2,000.

The mother of two’s defence lawyer said Naaman was naive and got involved with supplying the drug due to her husband being incarcerated.

The court heard when he went to prison he allegedly suggested to Naaman to supply the drug as a way to support herself financially and supply him while inside.

The defence said an example of Naaman’s naivety was the fact she sold 100 buprenorphine strips for $2,000 when 468 of the strips had a street value of $35,000.

The court heard she cooperated with police when she was arrested.

Judge Craig Chowdhury said all crimes related to drugs are treated seriously by the courts.

“Supply of dangerous drugs is a serious problem in society and it has been for many years,” he said.

“In some ways it’s a tragedy to see you here as you’re not the usual candidate we see here in court.”

Naaman was sentenced to 15 months in prison, wholly suspended and a conviction was recorded.

Her mobile phone was also forced to be forfeited.
