A Caboolture plumber who was in the Brisbane Broncos Academy as a teen has been jailed for a shocking, deliberate car crash into speeding hoons, a court has heard.

Alexandre Wolfgang Charles Albert, 27, was a member of the rugby league academy before injury ruined his career, Beenleigh District Court heard on June 3.

The Upper Caboolture man pleaded guilty to dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing grievous bodily harm.

The court heard Albert was driving on the Pacific Mwy in Daisy Hill on April 29, 2022 when he encountered two speeding drivers in a Lexus and a Mazda.

The two cars were driven by 17-year-olds and the court heard they were speeding at 148kmh and 168kmh, respectively, while racing each other.

Albert, whose wife was a passenger in his car, began tailgating them.

He was tailgating the Mazda then deliberately swerved into it, hit a crash barrier and rolled several times as the Lexus turned off the motorway.

The court heard his wife’s hand was severely injured as a result of the crash and needed surgery, resulting in Albert being charged with grievous bodily harm caused by the dangerous operation of his car.

The court also heard he made disturbing claims to police which he later denied.

“I swerved to teach them a lesson, to sort them out,” Albert said to police at the scene, the court heard.

Defence barrister Greg McGuire said his client was a successful sportsman whose life spiralled out of control.

“He was a promising rugby league player and was formerly in the Brisbane Broncos academy as a teen,” he said.

“Mr Albert is a father of two and currently works as a plumber.

“His life spiralled out of control when he began taking drugs and went into rehab.

“As a result of the crash he began having flashbacks, seeing his wife’s finger hanging off in the car.”

Albert’s wife could be heard sobbing uncontrollably from the back of the court as the gruesome details of the crash were read out.

Judge Vicki Loury said Albert’s traffic history was appalling.

“Two times you were convicted for driving 40km/h over the speed limit,” she said.

“It is only by good fortune more serious injuries were not sustained by the other drivers or by your wife.”

Albert was sentenced to two years’ prison, to serve six months of actual custody before being released on parole.

His driving licence was also disqualified for one year.
