A Logan man was caught by police with a gun in a stolen car outside a popular pub in Brisbane’s south, a court has heard.

Beenleigh Magistrates Court heard on Thursday, May 18, that 27-year-old Aaron Burroughs stole a car and drove to Meadowbrook Hotel in Logan.

The Woodridge man was playing pokies when police approached him.

After searching him they found a shortened firearm which he said did not work and when asked why it didn’t work, Burroughs said “because I’m an idiot”.

Police prosecutor Tahlia Boettcher said Burroughs had an “unenviable criminal history” and that carrying a firearm in a public place was a very serious offence.

Burroughs pleaded guilty to unlawful use of a motor vehicle, unlawful entry and possession of a shortened firearm for the July 28, 2022 offence.

The court heard Burroughs had battled an addiction to methamphetamine and hoped to start drug counselling when released.

Magistrate Mark Howden sentenced him to 18 months prison, to serve 12 months of actual custody.

He had already served 110 days of pre-sentence custody and was given a parole release date of January 28, 2024.
