A 15-year-old Logan boy has survived urgent brain surgery after falling from an e-scooter outside his school on Tuesday and is now in ICU.

Paramedics treated the teenager for life-threatening head injuries following the incident on McKinnon Dr at Yarrabilba on 8.30am.

He was taken to Queensland Children’s Hospital in a critical condition and later moved to the Princess Alexandra Hospital for emergency surgery.

Police confirmed the boy was travelling on a footpath near Yarrabilba State Secondary College and not wearing a helmet.

According to police he was travelling at about 20kmph when he lost control and fell from the scooter.

Yarrabilba State Secondary College has since released a statement addressing the incident.

“One of our students sustained serious injuries after a fall from his electric scooter. The Ambulance Service attended our school in response to the incident,” the statement read.

“Please be assured that the safety and welfare of your children is our utmost priority. Students affected by the incident have been offered support and counselling.

The accident has led to an outcry from parents and the school community for more safety measures to be put in place.

“You need a license truly if you are going to use an e scooter,” one local said.

“What’s wrong with wearing a helmet, hard way to learn…maybe parents need to be spoken to,” another added.

“One can hope this will be a hard lesson to the students at YSSC that they are not invincible as they seem to think…whether on foot or on wheels,” someone else said.

“Was sitting in Yarrabilba Coles car park waiting to pick up my step daughter the other week and was probably 10 different kids that rode past on them…either without a helmet, rode straight out onto the road without looking, trying to jump over things, trying to skid them or two or more kids on the one (scooter),” a local said.
