Drink driving: A guide to safe drinking

A repeat drunk driver from the northern Gold Coast blew high-range after a 10-hour drinking session at his local pub, which continued when he went home in the early hours of the morning.

Jacobs Well man Josh William Coates, 32, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Monday to the single charge of driving under the influence of liquor.

He returned a blood-alcohol content reading of 0.167 per cent.

The court heard Coates was picked up on June 13 at 3.45am on Pimpama Jacobs Well Rd.

He came to police attention when he began weaving towards the fog line, the court heard.

When questioned, he told officers he had drunk approximately six mixed spirits at the Jacobs Well Tavern in the 10 hours from 4pm, and consumed a further two beers after he had walked home with his flatmate.

The court heard Coates was behind the wheel as his flatmate had lost his phone on the walk home, and Coates had offered to drive the route to find it.

Coates had several prior drink driving convictions, the court heard, the most recent just over five years ago.

It was submitted on his behalf that as he had completed the Queensland Traffic Offenders Program, he should receive a discount on his sentence, but when Magistrate Clare Kelly made further inquiries, it was revealed Coates completed the program about six years ago.

“It obviously didn’t resonate with you,” she quipped.

Coates was disqualified from driving for six months and placed on probation for 15 months, a condition of which being that he must complete another round of the QTOP.

A conviction was recorded.
