WE’RE counting down the top 30 most influential people who help make the Wynnum-Manly community a great place to live.
There are so many people in our community who are doing great things and who are helping to make great things happen.
The list is only a sample and people are encouraged to suggest others.
Let’s acknowledge the people who help to make our community the great place it is.
The Wynnum Herald reveal five new people each day until we reach the final five on Wednesday, July 31.
Let us know in the comments what you think of the list and who you would include.
10. Michael Jullyan
Michael Jullyan is almost single-handedly responsible for some key developments on the bayside as part of his role with Thinktank Architects.
He and his team now design both residential and commercial properties, on projects valued up to $200 million. He also donates his time and skills to the Wynnum community, where Thinktank is based.
In 1992, he started Thinktank Architects as a sole-practitioner from his Brisbane home.
Today, Thinktank works with a wide range of clients, from some of the biggest construction companies in Australia, to builders with small businesses working on house renovations.
They deliver a wide range of innovative, market-leading and sophisticated building projects. Mr Jullyan has a strong sense of community spirit, providing his expertise and services free of charge to organisations in his community.
9. David Farley
Manly Chamber of Commerce president David Farley is one of the most passionate people you will meet when it comes to his bayside hometown.
Mr Farley and his family’s involvement on the bayside stretches back a long time, which is probably why he has invested so much of his time trying to make the bayside, especially Manly, a better place not only for residents and business owners but also for people from out of town to visit.
Mr Farley has played a big role in the establishment of the Manly Harbour Village, making the bayside suburb’s CBD a hub of activity, in particular on weekends and during holiday periods with a bunch of community events, including markets, free movies at the park and much more.
He has also played a significant role in creating the Manly Hallowen Street Parade, a huge day not only on the bayside but on the Brisbane calendar as well where more than 10,000 people hit local streets for the occasion.
8. Arthur Lovell
The man arguably responsible for the golden era in Wynnum Manly Rugby League is Arthur Lovell, who served as the president of the Wynnum Manly leagues Club for decades starting in the 1980s,
Lovell was the first to put significant resources from the Leagues Club into rugby league which paid dividends after being able to attract the likes of Wally Lewis, Gene Miles and more, who helped the club win three premierships in the 1980s.
He continued this service for years to come, a partnership which also helped the Seagulls claim their 2011 and 2012 Intrust Super Cup titles as well.
Lovell also helped establish the Leagues Club and Kougari Oval as one of the homes of Australian and Queensland schoolboy rugby league, which helped him receive a life membership with Australian Schoolboys Rugby League.
Lovell is also an Order of Australia Medal winner and with the Leagues Club helped give back to community organisations on the bayside for more than 20 years.
7. Di Fletcher
BABI Youth and Family Services is one of the key services in the bayside region and Brisbane in general for responding to the needs of young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness since the early 1980s.
One of the people responsible for developing BABI Youth and Family Services into a leading youth and family services provider in the Wynnum/Redlands region was Di Fletcher, who served as the CEO.
Ms Fletcher helped BABI become a place to help young people identify their goals and innate strengths, give them the tools to plan for the future, assist them in accessing resources, and provide targeted support to help them achieve their goals. Over the years BABI has developed expertise in developing young peoples’ skills and resilience so they can move forward with confidence.
6. Bruce Corrie and Judy Hamilton
Bruce Corrie and Judy Hamilton helped establish Rosies Friends on the Street’s Wynnum Manly branch, which is another key community service to help members of the bayside community.
Rosies reaches out to those most abandoned, to be present with them, offering them experience of community and belonging. Rosies reaches out to those in need, those people who are abandoned, marginalised, socially isolated within our communities.
Rosies Wynnum Manly started in 2016 but has since helped numerous bayside residents get back on their feet through the efforts of volunteers such as Mr Corrie and Ms Hamilton.
