Carl Davis: Regents Park man guilty of fourth disqualified drive

A young southeast Queensland man has been busted for a fourth time driving while disqualified by the courts, which fined him $1500 for his latest offence. But could also stand to lose a further $20,000 following a twist in the case.

A young Logan man has been fined $1500 and disqualified from driving for a further two years on top of his existing disqualification for switching the plates on his car to pick up dog food, a court has heard.

Regents Park man Carl John Davis, 24, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh Magistrates Court to one charge of driving while disqualified – repeat offender and one charge of driving a vehicle with another vehicle’s registration plates.

Both offences occurred on April 5 this year a short distance away from his Regents Park address, where he was intercepted.

Davis admitted to police he had changed the registration plates to “avoid police detection”, the court heard.

This is his fourth offence of driving while disqualified.

Defence lawyer Justin Sibley submitted that Davis, a scaffolder and furniture removalist who has recently turned his attention to “online trading and investment” to make a buck, had already been severely punished by virtue of the fact the car he was driving wasn’t his.

Davis had just sold the vehicle to a mechanic friend for $20,000 and had to return the deposit of $10,000.

Not only that, but as the vehicle had not been fully transferred to his friend, it remains impounded and may yet be auctioned off, meaning he would be left with nothing.

The two offences before the court were also committed while Davis was on probation for drug offences.

“He regrets his spur of the moment decision,” Mr Sibley said.

Magistrate Clare Kelly told Davis he was fast running out of chances.

“People can be imprisoned for this charge,” she said.

Davis was fined $1500 and disqualified for two years, on top of his existing, lengthy disqualification.

Convictions were recorded.
