‘About time’: multimillion-dollar expansion to provide Northsiders easier access to surgery

The state government has announced a much-needed boost in hospital funding just one month ahead of the election.

Qld hospitals unequipped to handle booming population

Plans to expand the emergency services department at the Prince Charles Hospital in Chermside have been fast tracked by an additional $3 million of state government funding.

The announcement by Deputy Premier and Minister Health Steven Miles comes just one month before the state government election and promises to “future proof” north Brisbane against the needs of its growing population.

The expansion will provide a much-needed boost to the hospital’s short-stay capacity, allowing for additional beds to accommodate both adults and children.

Surgery capacity is also expected to be improved, with a particular focus on the specialist cardiac services the hospital has become known for.

Member for Aspley Bart Mellish said the projects would maintain and enhance equitable local access to adult and paediatric ED services.

“The population around TPCH is projected to skyrocket across all age groups, with the largest projected percentage growth being for people over 70,” Mr Mellish said.

“The ED project will improve safety, quality, outcomes and patient experience within the ED.

“It will also mean local jobs that will support our plan to Unite and Recover for Queensland.”

The news was welcomed by the north Brisbane community, many of whom said it was “about time” the 630-bed Chermside hospital received an upgrade.

“It’s the best hospital but it’s always full,” said resident Amanda Lee.

A number of others have questioned why the spending was directed towards the emergency department, when the mental health services still require significant attention in Brisbane’s north.

Redcliffe resident Amy Lords said mental health services in her area “have been at a stand still” over the last few years.

“We cannot be expected to have our mentally ill referred to other hospitals from Redcliffe and leave it up to us to transport them there,” she said.

“This is why so many people just walk back out of hospital or get discharged when they really are not mentally well enough.

“The whole mental health system needs an overhaul.”

The expansion to the PCH will happen “as quickly as possible” though an official date is yet to be announced.
