The biggest NAPLAN improvers for schools in the Moreton region have been revealed — along with the schools which have gone backwards.
Australian Christian College - Moreton, in Caboolture, recorded the biggest improvement for a primary school with the average Year 5 NAPLAN results increasing by 8.3 per cent over the past five years of testing.
Wamuran State School was the second best with an increase of 5.42 per cent, followed by Beachmere State School with a rise of 4.8 per cent.
Mt Maria College - Petrie recorded the biggest improvement for a secondary school with average Year 9 NAPLAN results increasing by 3.97 per cent over the past five years of testing.
Woodford State School was the second best with a 3.44 per cent increase, followed by Deception Bay State High School with an increase of 3.17 per cent.
The analysis compared the five-year change in NAPLAN results, from 2017 and 2021, and revealed the schools which have improved their Year 5 and Year 9 student scores the most.
It was calculated by each school‘s combined results for each NAPLAN subject in 2017 and compared to the same results in 2021.
Meanwhile, Mount Mee State School in Mount Mee recorded the lowest improvement for a primary school with the average Year 5 NAPLAN results returning a result of -5.54 per cent over the past five years.
Good Shepherd Christian School in Albany Creek recorded the lowest improvement for a secondary school, returning a result of -4.34 per cent over the past five years.
Australian Christian College-Moreton principal Darren Lawson said the consistent Year 5 results showed the longer the school had the students, the more improvements would be seen.
“We see our improvement journey as just beginning and are planning to see those improvements accelerate from here,” Mr Lawson said.
“Many of our students do come from lower socio-economic backgrounds, but we would like to see them lift their eyes and see that they can match students from anywhere in the country and that all potential pathways are open to them.
“We feel we are just getting started on what it is possible to achieve with our students and we look forward to seeing their improvement accelerate in the coming years.”
Southern Cross Catholic College principal Chris Campbell said a NAPLAN team was created some years ago when the college identified improvement in its NAPLAN performance as a key priority.
“This program has been implemented consistently over the past years and has contributed significantly to our improvement,” Mr Campbell said.
“The preparation program consists of a data-informed approach whereby the NAPLAN team analyses student performance in the key areas of the test.
“By pre-testing student capacity in areas such as numeracy, reading etc the team is able to identify student strengths and weaknesses within each NAPLAN discipline.
“A targeted teaching and practice program is then created to address these strengths and weaknesses.
“I congratulate the staff for their commitment and the students for their dedication and desire to improve.”
