Inner Brisbane city state primary school traffic slammed by motorists

Parents of an inner-city state school have been slammed as entitled following “out of control” peak-hour pick-ups and drop-offs.

Parents of an inner-city state school have been accused of being “entitled” at pick-up and drop-off times which have sparked traffic delays and complaints to council.

Coorparoo State School parents have been slammed for triggering up to 30-minute peak hour delays in mornings and afternoons.

Brisbane City Council confirmed it had received 10 complaints this year with eight for illegal parking and two in the zones surrounding the school.

It comes after Coorparoo was one of 60 schools across the south east targeted in a traffic crackdown from the council following more than 500 fines issued in one term in 2018.

Photos taken outside Coorparoo State School at the end of term 3 and earlier this week showed traffic had banked up along Halstead St and surrounds from rush of parents.

A Courier-Mail reader claimed she was denied entry into Halstead St, which runs off Cavendish Rd, for about 30 minutes due to a procession of parents bumper to bumper.

The woman slammed the parents as “entitled” and said the school’s road safety strategy had failed.

“The level of entitlement by these parents at the drop-off and pick-up zones is out of control,” the woman said.

“I tapped on the windows of three cars blocking me to ask them to move but they just shrugged their shoulders and said to call the police.

“They should be circling the block until they can safety turn into the zone without impeding traffic.”

The woman said parents should be made to park vehicles elsewhere and use the supervised school crossing to pick up children at the gate.

A council spokeswoman said it was never an excuse to drive or park illegally.

“This is especially important in our school zones because it can put the lives of children and other drivers at risk,” she said.

“Council has been working with the school to improve safe travel in the area for many years including turn bans, installing yellow no stopping lines and monitoring parking.”

A department of education spokesman said it encourages all motorists and pedestrians in school zones to act safely and lawfully at all times, particularly during peak periods.
