Road rage during Springfield school drop-off

MOTORISTS around dozens of Brisbane schools will be targeted in a major crack down on dodgy parking habits.

The Courier-Mail can reveal Brisbane City Council will launch the traffic blitz at 60 schools across the city when students return from school holidays on Monday.

It comes after almost 500 motorists were slapped with fines for parking illegally around schools during term three, with hundreds of locals requesting enforcement action from the council.

Among the schools to be targeted in term four are Brisbane Boys’ College, Ferny Grove State School, Eagle Junction State School, Somerville House and Jamboree Heights State School.

BCC Infrastructure Chairman Amanda Cooper called on school communities to get behind the council’s safety campaign.

“Getting students to and from school safely is council’s number one priority, which is why we’re putting motorists on notice that we will be out at schools during term four to put a stop to illegal parking that’s putting our children in danger,” she said.

“Road safety is about protecting the lives of our children and we all play an important role in keeping our community safe.”

Cr Cooper said schools that had contacted the council were most concerned about vehicles that blocked driveways and motorists who parked in drop-and-go zones or on yellow lines.

She said about a quarter of Brisbane schools had already taken up the council’s offer to develop a traffic management plan, which have led to upgrades at 47 schools.

“At these schools we’re seeing less illegal parking, less traffic congestion and ultimately better safety for students,” she said.

“We want every school to have a tailor-made plan to manage parking more efficiently at pick-up and drop-off times, so that we can upgrade signage, create on-street drop and go zones and adjust parking restrictions to accommodate school needs.”

Meg Graham, who lives near Eagle Junction State School at Clayfield, said the number of cars dropping and picking up students in peak times was increasing.

She said the school worked hard to move traffic through the pick-up zone, but the problems rested with impatient parents.

“We have a wonderful school community, our teachers and administration do everything they can to make this work but we have a small minority of parents that are very selfish,” she said.
