Prep students head to class for first time

School students of all ages descended on the doors of Queensland classrooms on Monday morning for the start of the 2023 school year. SEE THE PHOTOS

There were nerves, some tears and plenty of smiles as a new year of prep students walked through the doors of their classrooms across Queensland for the first time.

Melanie Walters said her four-year-old daughter Frances was a ball of nerves on Sunday night but thoroughly enjoyed her first day of prep on Monday.

“She can’t wait to go back to school tomorrow,” Mrs Walters said.

First time school mum Amelia Hanson said she was counting down the hours until 3 o’clock for when she could pick up her five-year-old daughter Aurelia from prep.

“My husband and I were so happy for her and so excited to hit the milestone of walking her through the gates of school,” Mrs Hanson said.

“In the words of Aurelia when we asked how her day was she said ‘I love school, when can I go back’. It definitely was a successful day and a very special time.”

Prep students were introduced to PE studies, English, maths and music and were encouraged to make new friends in the playground on their first day, according to the mums.

“She loved making new friends and loved her teacher as well,” Mrs Hanson said.

“Luckily for us, all prep student stationary is pooled, so we don’t have to worry about her losing anything. Just yet.”
